Trapped in a Dilemma
We are amidst a huge paradigm shift. The materialistic worldview, once dominant, now appears to have run its course, leaving many feeling adrift without a sense of meaning or purpose. This existential uncertainty weighs heavily on us, causing feelings of anxiety and depression. We are left in a limbo wondering: Where do we go from here?
Many of us feel caught in an impossible choice: science or religion, mind or matter, logic or feelings. Basically, we're caught between embracing a materialist-scientific worldview that strips away meaning, or opting for subjective-idealism without a solid foundation in logic. No wonder we feel trapped. How could we reclaim meaning and purpose in our lives?
Peirce's Paradigm Shift
Charles Peirce (1839-1914) recognized these challenges as early as the 19th century and worked towards developing a comprehensive logical world view capable of bridging these artificial divides that cause the fragmentation of our lives.
Peirce reveals how misconceptions about the nature of logic is at the root of our current problems. He emphasizes how logic and reasoning are not merely computational, but rather involve also qualitative inferences like aesthetical judgements and sentiments.
Imagine you wake up to find that the grass in your yard is wet. You then infer that it must’ve rained overnight, as the grass is wet.
This is logic! You made your inference based on perceived signs. The wet grass was a sign, and you made a guess, that would explain that sign. Actually, you internalized information from your environment.
By internalizing information about the environment, we are communicating with it through signs. That is why Peirce sometimes defines signs as the “medium for the communication”. Actually, whole of our experience is communication with reality, which itself is also a vast sign.
Instead, of seeing ourselves as brains computing data, it is more accurate to conceptualize our experience as a continuous stream of analog information, comprised and mediated by innumerable fluctuating signs. We live fully immersed in this living and breathing flow of meaning.
And what are we doing in this stream? We are searching for meaning, embodying information and conforming to the underlying purposes, which guide this whole process.
Peirce provides us with semiotics, which is the logical tool to conceptualize this stream of information. It shows us how we perceive, experience, understand, and share meaning. It is the logic of reality, and it is at our disposal.
But again, in order to truly understand semiotics, one must accept the metaphysical reality of signs. In the foot steps of Peirce, we should truly belief that “the entire universe is perfused with signs, if it is not composed exclusively of signs.” This is the paradigm shift, the new Copernican revolution.
This is the way how meaning and purpose can be brought back to the world and into our lives.
My Philosophical Journey
My main focus is mainly on the philosophy of Charles Peirce. However, I also strive to connect Peirce's ideas with those of other thinkers. My aim is to share his insights and explore their broader applications. I believe Peirce's system of thought is essential for advancing our understanding and breaking free from the dead end of modernity.
I'm passionate about delving deep into the fundamental questions of philosophy. For me, philosophy is more than just an intellectual pursuit. It's a way of life aimed at personal transformation. The purpose of philosophical inquiry is to draw us nearer to the transcendent by shaping our habits to conform with it. Philosophy is participation with the eternal verities.
Above all, I seek Beauty, Goodness, and Truth, guided by the sentiments of Faith, Hope, and Love.
